"What tha hell d'ya mean 'No'?" she snarled at the podgy man standing behind the counter. His glasses were pushed up right to the bridge of his nose and he was sniffing like he'd had a cold since he was a child. This was the sort of person that she took lunch money from and he was going to turn around and refuse her? He grunted and pointed very deliberately to the badge peeking out from under the collar of her jacket. She looked down at it and gritted her teeth. Her fists were clenched inside the sleeves of her jacket and it was a good job that she was too much of a tomboy to keep her nails long or they would have broken skin. "Look," she started again, "I need these books for school. Ya have ta sell 'em ta me." He shook his head again and she lost her temper. She kicked the counter hard leaving a black scuff mark from her boot on the wood. He looked worried and then picked up a broom and began shaking it at her wildly. "Fine. Wouldn't buy from a scumbag like ya anyway!"
Niamh stormed from the shop, slamming the door behind her on her way and making the little bell ring wildly. Cailyn was waiting for a little way across the street and she made her way over to her sister, dragging her feet as she went. She dug her hands as far as they would go into the pockets of her scarlet jacket, a gift forced on her by their mother who was always worrying about her being cold. She looked at Cai and shook her head. "They're not going to serve me either," she huffed. "That's tha third shop and they're tha only ones left that have tha damn book! It's these stupid badges!" She ripped it off of the fabric and threw it to the ground. Then she jumped on it until it was so covered in dirt it was hardly recognisable. "What tha hell makes them so much better than us anyway? Ya could wipe tha floor wi' most of them when it comes ta Herbology and be damned if there's someone in my year that's better at potions. Course we'd never know 'cos we're not allowed to be anywhere near tha almighty purebloods." She cursed loudly in a way that neither her mother or her sister would approve of and folded her arms. "It's not fair," she tried again more calmly, as a way of explanation.

Cailyn hummed softly under her breath as she rocked back and forth from her heels to her toes. One of her favorite scarves was wrapped snugly around her neck, hair coiled up atop her head so that it was out of her face. The emerald green jacket she wore wasn't buttoned up, revealing the simple gray shirt she wore underneath. The hated muggleborn badge was pinned to the lapel of her jacket, in clear view of everyone who happened to glance in her direction. As much as she loathed having to wear a badge that proclaimed her lack of purity, Cailyn never missed a trip to Hogsmeade. Getting the chance to spend the day with her sister was always a treat she clung to, especially as they grew older and wandered farther from each other as they lived their own lives.
Chocolate brown eyes snapped toward the store across the street as the door flew open to reveal her clearly fuming sister. Cailyn winced as the door banged closed behind Niamh. She could only watch in shock at the display of temper her beloved younger sister gave. "Niamh!" She gasped as curse words bad enough to make her blush fell from her sister's lips. "Where on earth did you learn such language!" The soft scolding was more surprised than angry, not that Cailyn would ever approve of swearing for any reason. Dropping down, she plucked the badge off the street and began brushing off the dirt. A sad sigh escaped her lips as she rose back to her feet and pinned the badge back onto her sister's jacket. "I know it's not fair, but you mustn't do that."
Cailyn tutted softly, focused on getting the badge to remain in place. She slowly lifted her eyes to her sister's, smiling sadly. "You get into enough trouble already without adding this stupid badge to the list." The joke was horribly delivered, concern taking away any humor from her voice. Cailyn was terribly afraid something awful would happen to her precious sister if the girl was caught without her required badge. The fact that they were even allowed to attend Hogwarts was a miracle, something she had learned within her first year there. The young hufflepuff loved her family too much to see anything bad happen to them. Though if Niamh asked it of her, Cailyn would stand up beside her and rebel. Her loyalty to her sister came before her obedience of the rules and her instinctive desire to protect everyone.

Niamh rolled her eyes at her sister and titled her head to one side, mimicking the look that Cailyn gave her so often. It said, you know fine well so there's no point in asking. Usually she was on the receiving end of this glare, when she'd stolen a scarf and didn't want to own up to it or she'd been caught in a place she shouldn't be and knew it. "You've heard Murphy swear blue murder as often as I have," she pointed out, trying to wiggle away from her sister's fussing. The badge was being as uncooperative as she was, refusing to stay put on the collar of her jacket, causing Cailyn to tut loudly. Niamh slumped her shoulders and tapped her foot impatiently. "I put that on tha floor for a reason, y'know," she huffed, the slightly battered badge now pinned in place once more.
"Was tha supposed ta be a joke?" she asked, cocking her eyebrow at her sister. It was poor, even for her standards. Then Niamh noticed that special little look that Cailyn seemed to reserve just for her, the too-worried-to-be-anything-else look. She sighed and squeezed her shoulder briefly, as comforting as it came from the physical contact shy Gryffindor. "I know you're just out for me, Cay, and I'm grateful, I am." She glanced over to the other side of the street where the lucky purebloods were enjoying icecreams, coffees and cakes without so much as passing fear they wouldn't be served. "How much trouble ya reckon I'ma get in for not havin' tha stupid book then? And what are me chances they'd understand?" Niamh didn't even have to wait for the answer to know that it was a lot and zero.

Cailyn sighed softly and ran her fingers through her sister's hair lightly. Shaking her head at Niamh's stubborn nature, she couldn't help the little smile at the girl's rebellious streak. "Maybe Murphy knows someone who can get the books for us." There was little point in pretending that asking their brother meant he would do anything other than take the books at gunpoint, but Cailyn always maintained the illusion anyway. While she didn't approve of her brother's methods, she could hardly fault him for fighting for righteousness and justice in the only way he knew. Plus, they really did need the books in order to continue school. Murphy had been the one to acquire the two texts she had needed that no one would sell to a muggleborn.
Bumping her shoulder against her sister's, she nodded at the pureblood students happily eating their frozen treats. "Let's get out of here. No need to give them anymore of a show than we already have." She added, glaring at the few smirking boys who were still watching them as if hoping to see someone come beat them up. "What else do you need or want to get while we are here? I was thinking we could try Honeydukes for some candies, you know they always let us in there." Honeydukes was one of the few establishments that seemed to care more about the money they earned than the clientele they served. It was sad, but at least it meant the girls were allowed in the store.

"Aye, and maybe Murphy can cure world hunger and invent tha' feckin' space ship while he's at it, eh?" she ranted with frustration. Regardless of the fact that she knew fine well she needed Murphy if she was to ever get that book, she resented having to resort to asking her brother for something she should be able to get herself. Never seen to be dependent on anyone, Niamh couldn't bear the thought of following after her brother like a poodle. Besides, he was only going to get it by the barrel of his gun, why couldn't she do this same? A quick glance at Cailyn's face, so busy trying to make her feel better that she didn't care about the bigger issue and even the tough Gryffindor melted a bit.
The group of purebloods across the way were gathered like they were some kind of show at the circus. It was this way every time they came to Hogsmeade, it was this way in the Castle too and Niamh couldn't figure out what they thought was so damn amusing. They didn't look any different but they sure as hell acted like they were walking Gods. She focused on a group of boys that must have been her year or the year above and growled at them. Her fists clenched inside the sleeves of her jacket and if Cailyn hadn't been there, each one of them would have a black eye. The little bump on her shoulder brought her attention back to her sister and she nodded. "Yeah, alright. Need somethin' to bribe Murphy for those books, don't we. Never seen a grown man reach so fast for a chocolate frog in me life." A little, grudging smile flashed on her lips for a second as she thought of the perfect revenge for their smug spectators.

Cailyn giggled, winking at her sister playfully. "Well if you don't pounce on them fast, those little chocolate buggers hop away!" A fond expression danced in her eyes as she recalled the first time she ever had a chocolate frog. The silly magical chocolate had quite a hop in it, launching from the package right onto her head before vanishing into her closet. It had taken her a couple of hours to figure out where the treat had vanished to after she recovered from her shock at having the frog land on her head. To this day, Cailyn found herself taken by surprise by the initial hop of a chocolate frog. There was a reason she normally had either her brother or sister with her when she finally dared to open the chocolate. Murphy and Niamh had some sort of strange talent for tackling chocolate frogs before they could escape.
The short jaunt down the street did little to ease the feeling of hatred filled stares burning holes in their backs. It wasn't until the cheerful sign of Honeydukes met their searching gaze that Cailyn was able to breathe easier despite the glares behind them. Grabbing Niamh's hand, she tugged her sister into the lively shop. The other patrons barely gave them a second glance, all too focused on the variety of delicious treats spread out before their hungry eyes. With a happy smile on her lips, she headed straight to the display of chocolate frogs. "How many shall we get? I know one is enough to bribe Murphy." She giggled with another wink before scooping up a small handful of the amphibious shaped chocolate.

Niamh laughed, thinking of the last chocolate frog she'd handed to her brother and the next hour he'd spent tackling it to the floor. They were crafty little buggers to be sure, so good at leaping in and out of sight that they'd made excellent target practice. She thought it was a waste when an enchanted target might have done as well, or those pesky gnomes that had started eating away at the apple trees, but she couldn't deny they kept her on her toes. Cailyn had always been a bit jumpy herself when it came to the magical chocolate and more than once she'd had to jump after them for her. Licorice wands might have been tastier but hell, they didn't give you half the workout. On the train to Hogwarts for the first time, Niamh had spent practically her year's allowance on nothing but sweets and cakes and then complained bitterly that their sandwiches hadn't been exciting at all. Murphy and Cailyn had just laughed at her.
She felt better once they got inside Honeydukes. The air was sort of warm in there, sticky and sweet in the way that reminded her of Saturday mornings in the Talaith household. Their mother was a crack hand at baking like no one would believe and when the weekend came the siblings knew that they would have a mountain of tupperware boxes full to the brim with flapjacks, scones, buns, cookies and brownies to eat their way through before the next Saturday came. There hadn't been a time in memory where Niamh hadn't been found in the middle of week, in the dead of night, munching her way through the last of them. The chocolate frogs were sitting neatly in rows and she had the urge to tear all the packets just enough to set off the charm and see how long it took the shop keeper to round them all up.
She dug her hand in her pocket and pulled out a collection of coins, sifting through them in her palm. "7 sickles 4 knuts," she confirmed, her eyebrows moving around as she tried to work out how much that meant in chocolate. "I saw we get four, one for each of us and an extra for Murph. The boy looks skinnier every time I see him. Ma would say he needed to put flesh on them bones. I want ta get some Bertie Botts beans too oh and licorice wands! There's a guy I know will trade you a quick answer quill for just a lick of licorice. Madness for sure, but ya can't turn down a bargain," she grinned. With arms full of candy she dumped her purchases on the counter, throwing in a packet of fairy dust for Cailyn as good measure. "Present," she offered it to her sister as they left the shop. "Now let's get back to school before I'm too fat to walk, eh?"

Cailyn bounced over to the register in her sister's wake, eyes bugging out as the other girl nabbed more candy as they went. The last minute packet of fairy dust sent a flush of excitement and pleasure racing through her at the thoughtful gift. "Thank you!" She chirped, accepting the packet before pouncing on her sister with a tight hug. Half the fun of hugging Niamh was watching the girl twitch in mock misery at the over affectionate public display. "If all those sandwiches you eat don't make you fat, I highly doubt a few candies will. You'd think mother made all her baked goods low-fat or something seeing as you and Murphy never seem to put a single stone on!"
Cailyn was well known for sharing her large batches of baked goodies with the other Hufflepuffs. She often would leave the Tupperware boxes in the common room for the others to help themselves to. Linking her arm with Niamh's, she skipped along happily at her sister's side. A visit in Honeydukes never failed to put an extra spring in her step. Even so, the morning's events had made her a bit on edge so when she saw a shadow out of the corner of her eye, it took all her self-control not to leap into Niamh's arms with a shriek. Plus it would have dire consequences for the innocent candy Niamh carried.
She yanked her sister to a dead stop as a muffled little peep of an alarmed squeak escaped her throat. "Did you see that?" She whispered, pretending to be fussing with her sister's hair while flickering her eyes toward where she had seen the shadow. "I think someone is watching us! What do you suppose they want? Your badge is still on right?" There was a quiver of fear in her voice, all peppy-cheerfulness slipping away. Quickly checking that they both still had their hated badges in place, Cailyn glanced over again but failed to see anything but bright sunshine and empty space.

Tallulah let out a heavy sigh as a smug Gryffindor boy swaggered into what she consider to be her personal space. She had been enjoying a pleasant afternoon away from the stifling monotony of the castle and its grounds, escaping to the village for just a few short hours was the least she could do to keep her sanity intact. Life at Hogwarts had been moving along at a snail's pace of late, nothing but routine and the busy nothings that made things so unbearably dull. After the massacre of Mecca and the events that followed she had been taking a well earned rest but, as she felt her strength returning, she was longing for something to entertain herself. There had been an infuriating lack of Tutela activity of late, as much as she wanted to crush them all into dust there was hardly any fun in life without something or a challenge so it was unlikely she was going to find her answer there. She wasn't going to find it in the preening Gryffindor either.
He opened his mouth, no doubt armed with a well-rehearsed chat up line but unfortunately his intended distraction was not enough to catch her today. "Well that was fascinating," she finished the conversation before it had even begun. She pushed her glass, containing the dregs of a coffee laced with fire whiskey, towards him and rose from her seat. "Au revior," she turned on her heel and clicked away from the guppy mouthed boy without another word. Tallulah pulled on the tan coloured crochet cardigan that had been hanging across the back of her chair and made her way out into the street. There she found a sight that upset her more than the toothy grin of her would-be date. Mudbloods. Crawling from every shop door and alley way they came in sickening numbers to spoil the street for those that deserved to be there. She watched as a group of boys started gesturing at two of them, distinguishable by the badges pinned to their jackets.
She popped into the potions store, picking up a couple of strengthening solutions after she'd used her supply on a mission not that long ago. They weren't necessary perhaps, she was getting stronger by the day, but she liked to have them on the off chance they might be useful. When she returned to the street the two girls were there once again, happy and skipping and everything that Tallulah just despised about the whole sickening race. Her footsteps fell into line behind them, caught by the sensation that she knew one of them. Although their conversation was mediocre and quite frankly infuriating, she did manage to catch a glimpse of the older girls face and realised where she was from. The Talaiths were a particularly rampant plague amongst the student body and that girl was a member of the Tutela.
In the back of her mind a plan began to form and though the pieces were not entirely fitting together as of yet, it had a very solid foundation. Perhaps there was a way to shock the Tutela into action, and from that muster their numbers into convenient spot for elimination, and satisfy her boredom all in one fell swoop. However, she had stayed too long in their direction path and the girl caught her in the corner of her eye. Tallulah disappeared in a rather expert covert way into the alcove of a convenient alley where she continued to watch. They looked around for signs of their follower but could find none. Her emerald eyes narrowed and a familiar glint sparked like a flame bursting to life and she continued her shopping trip in much better spirits than before.
