Character Name: Artemis Kristos
Character Age: 15
Nicknames: None
Blood Status: Halfblood
Appearance:
Artemis was a small boy, standing at barely five feet six inches. With a pale complexion and thin, aristocratic features, he was a total enigma. He had the half-starved look and deepness in his eyes bred from years of neglect and near-starvation. Despite that, he walks with the confidant certainty of someone who knew he could handle himself and wasn't afraid of anything. he put forth a mask of cold indifference that made even some of the adults around him squeamish. On the rare occasion that he spoke, his voice was devoid of any and all emotion. He had the telltale signs of some South-Eastern Asian heritage, but with a splash of Mediterranean from his father.
Personality:
On the outside, Artemis put up the mask that he was completely devoid of emotion. The way he looked, most were certain he could kill a man just as easily as he could save someones life. He made himself out to look like the place where his soul would be was now completely devoid of life. This did not make him dark, however. Artemis Kristos understood the need for balance. Some would classify him in the 'Grey' area. Yes, he practiced both 'light' and 'dark' magic, but he believed that intention was the true difference between light and dark.
On the inside, though, Artemis was a completely different person. He would take it upon himself to enforce balance in the world. In his early years, it was driven into him. "You are the catalyst for many lives, Arty, but first you must learn to survive," his mother used to repeat to him, before her death. After that, he lived on his own on the streets for two years until the Hogwarts letter came. Knowing he would need money, he resorted to stealing. There were many places a 10 year old boy could get to that an older thief could not, and this made him enough money to pay for All seven years of Hogwarts plus his supplies. In order to survive, he learned everything he could, often reading through the night. Seeing as he had no home, he was not at danger of receiving a letter from the Ministry of Magic on his underage usage.By the time he was 14, he successfully apparated. He spent his holidays reading even further ahead than his classmates. By the start of his fifth year, he had started reading seventh year texts.
Background:
When Artemis was young, his father often abused him. Many times if not for his magic then he would have died. While he loved his mother, he could not grasp the reason for her inaction. She sat by and watched her son pushed to the brink of death, but when asked about it, she replied to him, "Artemis, one day you will understand why I have allowed you a sense of independence. You will be a catalyst of many lives." Artemis never realized it but his mother had a bit of seer blood in her, and could see results of peoples actions but not the actions they took.
Artemis' life changed completely on the 11th of August, when he was nine years old. Artemis, always a light sleeper so he could hide at a moments notice, woke up at the first drift of smoke. From his room on the second floor, Artemis bolted out of his door in search of an escape. He eyed the stairs, knowing that he would die if he chose to leave through that route. The flames were already halfway up the stairs. That was the moment that thoughts of his mother still asleep filled his mind.
When he passed the stair to the third floor, he discovered that his father set a second fire on the roof. As he made it to the master bedroom, he heard a scream from behind the door. Bursting through, he saw his mother with a shaft of burning wood from the roof impaled in her stomach. As he rushed over to her side, she said her last words; "Artemis, listen to me. You will become the embodyment of balance. You, and you alone, have the power inside you to balance the light and dark. But first, you must leave here. Climb down the side of the house, darling, and run. Run and never look back. Then you must survive. Goodbye, son." With that, Anastasia Kristos drew her final breath.
So Artemis ran. He tried to forget his mother's words, her promises of balance, but he could not. She spoke with conviction, with the knowledge that her words would change a young boy, turning him into the sole embodyment of balance. He learned to balance anger and compassion, hate and love, light and dark. For the next two years he taught himself the skills he would require in order to go out into the world. Artemis Kristos may not have known how he would do it, or when, but he would do his mother proud and bring balance to the world.
